Portable notes on Windows 7 (installer + USB file)

The search is usually honest: “portable notes Windows 7”, “SEO Note portable”, sometimes just “download for Win7”. The laptop still boots. It will not run the store. It will not sign into a Microsoft account to jot a grocery list. You want a stick you can pocket, not another workspace in the browser.

SEO Note is a free Windows tree outliner: one local file, text / rich text / HTML, no mandatory cloud. The official download is SEONoteInstall.exe (~2.45 MB), listed for Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 (XP or later on the requirements list). It is not a PortableApps .paf.exe and not a zip that you unzip and double-click from the stick. The file is portable. The program is an installer you run on each PC you actually use.

Rule: if a random catalog offers “SEO Note Portable.zip”, skip it. Use the installer from seonote.su and copy your own notes file. Unknown zips are how you get a different program with the same name.

If you need a true “run from USB, write nothing to Program Files” build, this product does not advertise one. If you need notes that survive a Win7 workshop PC and a Win11 desktop without an account, the kit below is the supported path.

Why the old laptop still shows up in search

  • Lab / workshop / warehouse machines that never got Windows 10
  • A home PC that “just prints” and nobody wants to rebuild
  • Policies that block Microsoft accounts and browser notebooks
  • Slow disks where a 2.45 MB installer is less painful than a 400 MB Electron app
  • The stubborn wish to open last year’s tree without converting it to someone else’s format

Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 7 years ago. That is an OS problem: no security patches from Microsoft, old browsers, old TLS. SEO Note does not patch Windows. It also does not require a store, a live ID, or a network to open a note. Mix those two facts and you get a useful program on an OS you should not trust for banking. Keep the machine off the open internet if you can; keep the notes file on something you can pull out.

What actually travels

Not “the app as a magical folder.” Two objects:

  1. The installer from this site — so a borrowed Win7 or Win11 box can get the program without hunting mirrors
  2. The data file you created in SEO Note — the tree. Without it you have an empty window

The weekly copy ritual (dated zips, restore tests) lives in backup notes to USB. This page is the mixed-OS travel kit: same file, two Windows generations, no fantasy of a hidden portable exe.

USB:\SEONote-kit\
  tools\
    SEONoteInstall.exe
  notes\
    work-notes (your real filename)
readme.txt (which PC is master this week)

Keep the installer in tools\ even if both of your machines already have SEO Note. The day a relative’s Win7 box is the only keyboard in the house, you will not want to download anything on that box.

Same sitting: Win7 machine ↔ newer PC

1 Download installer to tools\
2 Ctrl+S; copy the notes file
3 Install on the other Windows
4 Open the file; confirm one recent note
5 Copy back before you leave

How-to (one sitting)

  1. On a machine that already has a browser, open download.php and save SEONoteInstall.exe into USB:\SEONote-kit\tools\. Check the size is about 2.45 MB — a 40 MB surprise is the wrong file.
  2. In SEO Note press Ctrl+S. Copy the data file into notes\. If you are not sure which file it is, look at File → the path in the title bar after a save. Do not copy a random .tmp.
  3. Eject the stick properly. Walk to the Windows 7 PC (or the Win10/11 one, if you started on seven).
  4. Run the installer from tools\. Accept the usual Windows prompts. Start SEO Note from the Start menu — not by double-clicking a guessed exe inside Program Files if you do not know the path yet.
  5. File → Open the copy from notes\. Better: copy notes\ onto that PC’s Documents first, then open the disk copy. Cheap USB controllers stutter; a notes file that lives only on a flaky stick is a bad master.
  6. Find one note you wrote this week. If it is missing, you copied the wrong file. Stop. Do not “create a new tree” on top of the confusion.
  7. When you finish editing on the road, Ctrl+S, copy the file back to the stick before you shut down. Write in readme.txt which computer last saved. Two masters is how trees fork and you spend Sunday merging by eye.

You can keep SEO Note installed on both PCs. The stick is the courier, not a third editor. If you only use one machine, you still want the installer on the stick: the next machine will not have it.

Windows 7 specifics that actually matter

  • No Microsoft Store, no “get the app”. The installer is the whole distribution.
  • No account to create a note. That is the point on a box that cannot sign into anything modern.
  • The same file opens on Windows 8 / 10 / 11 with the same installer family. You are not converting formats at the OS boundary.
  • XP is listed as “or later” on the download page; Windows 7–11 is what the site recommends. If a museum PC is on XP, try the installer, but do not plan a business around it.
  • UAC on later Windows may ask for admin during install. That is the installer doing installer things — not a cloud login.

When this kit is the wrong tool

  • You wanted a PortableApps package you can run from USB without installing. That package is not on this site. Do not invent one from a forum dump.
  • You need the same tree on a phone in a taxi. SEO Note has no mobile client. Export a slice to HTML/txt if someone else must read it on a phone.
  • Two people must edit at once. There is no live collab. Pass the file; wait; do not email “version 7 final FINAL”.
  • The Win7 box is on public Wi‑Fi and you keep passwords in the tree. Encrypt the zip on the stick (see the backup guide) or keep secrets out. The program does not make the OS safe.
  • You refuse to run any installer, even a 2.45 MB one. Then you need a different product that ships a documented portable folder. Honesty beats a fake “portable SEO Note”.

Mini FAQ

Is there a portable version? Officially: an installer plus a file you copy. No PortableApps listing from seonote.su.

Does it work on Windows 7? The download page lists Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 (XP or later). That is the claim to test on your box — old video drivers and broken USB stacks still exist.

Can I copy the Program Files folder to the stick and run it? Not a supported workflow here. Use the installer on each PC. If a copy-folder trick works on your machine, treat it as your experiment, not a promise from this page.

Next steps

  1. Create SEONote-kit\tools and notes on a stick
  2. Download SEO Note free (~2.45 MB) into tools\
  3. Save and copy today’s notes file; open it once on the other Windows
  4. Add a line to readme.txt: which PC is master
  5. If you do not yet have dated zips, follow the USB backup layout so the kit is not the only copy

Adjacent tools (VPS for local models, courses, VPN) are not stuffed into every paragraph. If an affiliate link appears, it will be labeled and is never required to use SEO Note.
