SEO Note is a free Windows notes manager / tree outliner. Tree on the left, editor on the right, bookmark panels for several trees in the same document. No mandatory account, no cloud requirement. Strong for private archives, offline work and USB backup. Weak for live collaboration, phone-first capture and Notion-style databases.

One file instead of a folder scavenger hunt

Articles live as named nodes in a tree. For many people one SEO Note file is enough: themes such as Todo, Addresses, Finance, Notes — each a branch, not a separate document lost under Downloads. You open the file once and navigate; you do not hunt filenames.

That does not mean “put your entire life in a single megapage.” It means the container is one file while the shape stays hierarchical. When a note grows past a screen or two, split children. When a project ends, drag the subtree under Archive.

Uneven depth is fine. Addresses may be flat; a project may nest four levels. Force symmetry only when it helps you find things.

Bookmark panels

Bookmark panels (section labels) let you keep several independent trees inside one SEO Note document. Typical split: Work vs Personal, or Clients vs Internal. You switch panels instead of juggling five files — while still saving one path for backup.

Use panels when roots would otherwise fight each other. Do not create a panel for every mood; three clear trees beat twelve empty ones.

Rule: one file for backup simplicity; bookmark panels when two maps should not share a root — not when you are bored of renaming nodes.

Three article formats

• Text — simple editor for plain documents; fast capture, least formatting surprise
• Rich text — Word-like editing (fonts, size, color, styles, alignment). Supports OLE: paste objects from programs that support that technology (diagrams, pictures, clips, documents, and similar)
• HTML — lightweight HTML editing with pictures and links; export to .html when you need a portable page. Ctrl+R opens source view; Ctrl+W returns to web view

Rich text and HTML show toolbars for common formatting. Pick a default for new notes and stick to it until you have a reason to switch. Mixing every format in one project without a rule creates export headaches later.

Import and export

Create notes from or export articles to .txt, .rtf/.doc and .html. You can also import whole trees from TreePad 2.7 and KeyNote 1.6.5. After a bulk import, park raw material under Archive / import-batch, then promote what you reopen into live branches with clearer titles.

Export a branch when sharing with someone else. Handing over the entire private file is rarely the right courtesy — or the right security habit.

Beyond formats, the product surface includes what you expect from a classic outliner: add, delete, rename and drag notes; expand/collapse parents; note descriptions and stats; optional password on some notes; read-only flags for text and rich-text modes; find by name; sort the tree; attach files to a note then extract them; convert an article between txt / rtf / html; place an icon on a note. Context menus on the tree and editor (right-click) expose many of the same actions.

Keyboard shortcuts for the daily path — Insert (child), Ctrl+Shift+Insert (sibling), F2 (rename), Ctrl+N/O/S/Q, clipboard and undo, Ctrl+F, Ctrl+T date/time, Ctrl+D calendar, F12 file switcher — are listed on the Hot keys page. Launch from C:\Program Files\SEONote\SEO Note.exe or the Start menu shortcut.

People put very different lives into the same model. A short, uneven list of fits:

If the job is “structure I can rearrange and own as a file,” it fits. If the job is “five people edit the same page right now,” pick a collaborative tool and keep SEO Note for the private map.

Honest limits

• No live multi-user editing, no built-in AI, no mandatory sync
• Windows desktop is the design center; mobile is not parity
• OLE and rich formatting increase file complexity — use them where they earn their keep
• Imports from other outliners need cleanup; do not expect perfect one-click migration
• You must back up the data file yourself (copy to disk, USB, or encrypted archive)

Mini FAQ

Is one file enough forever? Often yes. Split files or lean on bookmark panels when backup schedules or privacy boundaries differ.

Should everything be HTML? No. Default to text or rich text for most notes; use HTML when links and light page structure matter.

Where do passwords go? Optional note passwords help casual privacy on a shared PC. They are not a vault — keep real secrets in a proper password manager.
