Cloud PKM apps still win at live collaboration and phone-first capture. They lose when you care about a clear copy of record, airplane mode, or company rules that frown on personal SaaS. Keep AI scratch separate from Reference. Models produce text quickly; your second brain should store what you still believe after reading it. Promote a draft by rewriting it in your words under Projects or Reference — not by dragging the chat dump upward and calling it knowledge.

Rule: chat output is a suggestion until it lives in the tree in your wording. Polished prose is not the same as a decision.

Capture without turning the tree into a junk drawer

Cloud disk-as-backup is fine if you admit it is no longer a pure offline contour — and it still does not replace the local original.

Daily minimum is shorter than the weekly pass: open Inbox, add one sentence to an active project, close a tab after capture. A second brain survives on touch frequency, not on a perfect folder religion.

How AI fits without owning the vault

Open the relevant parent — one project, not the whole archive. Copy Facts + Decisions + the question. Paste into any chat with a hard line: do not invent missing numbers. Review. Can I keep everything in one node? You can. You will regret it at search time. Prefer shallow parents and specific children.

What if I already live in a cloud wiki at work? Keep the company wiki for shared docs. Keep private decisions and sensitive context in the local file.

How do I carry a second brain on a flash drive between work and home? One data file plus the installer (about 121 MB for 2.1, ~2.5 MB for the classic 1.3.34) in their own folder on the drive: open, add, Ctrl+S, copy back. The hard rule is that one machine edits the file at a time, otherwise a later save overwrites an earlier one.

What if I need phone capture and sync? The honest limit of the classic build: desktop first, no auto-sync — git sync and WebDAV/S3 live in the desktop 2.1 line, not there. On the phone there is a signed 2.1 APK (~10 MB, Android 6.0 and newer) that keeps notes as a folder of Markdown files on the device; passwords, the web clipper and AI answer there with an explicit refusal, and you merge that folder into the desktop tree the same day. If you need mobile capture that reaches the PC by itself, leave that layer to the cloud and keep the truth in the file.

Do I need to study PARA and Zettelkasten before building a second brain? The names are optional; three layers are enough: capture (Inbox), truth (Projects and Reference), and archive.
